Calming Your Mind With Quan Yin

Kuan Yin on dragon
Taking time to calm your mind while you are awake can have powerful benefits such as: lowering stress levels and experiencing a more attentive mind. Anxiety, depression, anger and fatigue can subside thus improving your overall mood.

Not all stress is bad. Stress is a necessary and important element of daily living. Stress can prepare the body or mind in an instant for situations that require immediate strength and action. A little stress can improve concentration and job performance, but when stress continues throughout the day or longer it becomes chronic stress and suppresses the immune system causing rapid aging, making the body retain excess fat, dulling thinking, increasing pain and is the cause of more than 80% of illnesses today. Chronic stress is caused by fear and generally reduces the quality of life.

Calming your mind assists you to discipline your mind. You will begin to have more control of your thoughts and your mind will become clear.

Utilizing and regularly practicing Quan Yin’s “Calming Your Mind” mudra, is one of many techniques that can be used to calm your mind and begin experiencing quality life in your daily living.

The more you practice and become experienced with Quan Yin’s mudras, the more you will be able to answer questions you may have about your inner self (how to live your life with fulfillment). You will become congruent with your Higher Power, whatever that may mean or be for you.

To begin practicing the “Calming Your Mind” mudra with Quan, find a quiet place where you can sit comfortably and close your eyes, breathe slowly and deeply in through your nose filling your belly and chest at the same time, exhaling slowly through your mouth empting your chest and belly simultaneously. Bend your arms in front of you and bring them up to your chest level. Elbows are bent at a 90-degree angle with arms parallel to the ground. Your right hand is on top of your left arm and the left hand is under the right arm. Palms are facing the ground and all fingers are held together and straight. Hold and keep your arms from sinking for approximately 3 minutes, then relax and be still for about 7 or more minutes. Repeat as often as necessary.

Meditating with Quan Yin

Meditating with Quan Yin
Meditation is a holistic discipline available to anyone to use to get beyond the “thinking” mind and move into a deeper state of relaxation or awareness. Mediation is experienced in many religions as well as outside religious traditions; it has been practiced since ancient times.

Different meditative styles include a wide range of spiritual and non-spiritual goals. Depending on the intent and/or method of meditation practiced, the practitioner can achieve a higher state of consciousness or enlightenment, develop and increase compassion and loving kindness, receive spiritual inspiration or guidance, achieve greater focus, creativity or self-awareness, or cultivate a more relaxed and peaceful state of mind.

Eastern meditation techniques have been adapted and are practiced in Western culture. Mudras are one of many forms of meditation used to accomplish spiritual or non-spiritual goals.

The “Meditation” mudra can be used to develop the practice of meditating with Quan Yin.

To practice the “Meditation” mudra, find a quiet place where you can sit comfortably and close your eyes, breathe slowly and deeply in through your nose simultaneously, filling your belly and chest, exhaling slowly through your mouth empting your chest and belly at the same time. Place the four fingers of your right hand on the pulse of your left wrist, pressing lightly and feeling the pulse in each fingertip. Close your eyes and focus on your third eye. With each pulse repeat Quan Yin’s name and continue to breathe.

Quan Yin's Stress Prevention Mudra

Quan Yin Stress Prevention
The unique state of restful alertness gained during the practice of Quan Yin’s stress prevention mudra, can promote health by reducing activation of the sympathetic nervous system, which in turn dilates the blood vessels and reduces stress hormones, such as adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol.

To practice the stress prevention mudra; find a quiet place where you can close your eyes and breathe slowly and deeply in through your nose filling your belly and chest and exhaling slowly through your mouth empting your chest and belly simultaneously. Hold your left hand in your right palm at waist level with both palms facing up. Continue to breathe deeply while visualizing you and Quan Yin visiting your favorite place such as the ocean, the forest, the mountains, etc. Practice this stress prevention mudra as often as needed.

Quan Yin's "Fearlessness" Mudra

Quan Yin Fearlessness Mudra
Quan Yin has many mudras we can use to align ourselves with her to assist us in overcoming a challenge or accomplish a goal.

In our hands we all hold the ancient keys to self-improvement and self-empowerment. Whatever challenge or situation we may be experiencing in the moment a mudra can help us resolve obstacles and improve our life.

The first mudra being introduced is the “Fearless” mudra: The right hand is raised to shoulder level with the palm open and facing forward and the left hand is held at waist level in an open position with the palm facing up. You should be comfortable and relaxed in this position with your eyes closed or open and focused on an image of Quan Yin. Remember to slowly breathe in through your nose filling your belly and lungs simultaneously and exhaling slowly through your mouth empting your belly and lungs at the same time.

This mudra can be practiced as often as required. Mudras are a treasure to be appreciated, respected and used.
